What is Maryland Spirits Month?
November 2020 marks the 3rd Annual Maryland Spirits Month–a statewide celebration of Maryland’s distilling and spirits industry. Maryland Spirits Month highlights the local businesses throughout the Free State that produce delightful and innovative distilled spirits. Whether your palate prefers the spice of rye whiskey or the sweet hints of rum, members of the Maryland Distillers Guild produce spirits for you!
Maryland, the Free State
One of the monikers given to Maryland is a nod to the state’s historical roots. According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, “the name “Free State” was given in 1919, when Congress passed a law prohibiting the sale and use of alcohol. Marylanders opposed prohibition because they believed it violated their state’s rights.”
