What is Maryland Spirits Month?
November 2023 marks the 6th Annual Maryland Spirits Month–a statewide celebration of Maryland’s distilling and spirits industry.
Maryland Spirits Month highlights the local businesses throughout the Free State that produce delightful and innovative distilled spirits. Whether your palate prefers the spice of expertly aged rye whiskey or the sweet hints of rum, members of the Maryland Distillers Guild produce spirits for you!
Maryland, the Free State
How did Maryland earn the nickname “The Free State?”
One of Maryland’s most well-known nicknames is a nod to the state’s historical relationship with alcohol. According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, “the name “Free State” was given in 1919, when Congress passed a law prohibiting the sale and use of alcohol. Marylanders opposed prohibition because they believed it violated their state’s rights.”
Who are the Maryland Distilleries?
Maryland’s distilling industry consists of nearly 50* independent, local businesses. Currently, the state is home to 46 licensed distillers, each of them employing Marylanders and relying on raw materials grown in the state. Located throughout the state there’s a distillery near you!
