From our lobbyists at RWL:
On Thursday, longtime Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. announced he will step down from his presiding officer post in January 2020. He will remain a member of the Maryland Senate. At the same press conference, the Senate Democratic Caucus announced it will unanimously support Senator Bill Ferguson as President Miller’s successor. With thirty-two (32) out of forty-seven (47) votes in the Maryland Senate, the Democratic nominee will almost inevitably assume the post when it opens.
President Miller became the Senate’s presiding officer in 1987, making him the longest serving state senate president in the country. He was first elected to the Senate in 1975. Rifkin Weiner Livingston LLC (RWL) proudly adds its name to the chorus of citizens, businesses, advocates, and supporters who extend heartfelt thanks to President Miller for his selfless leadership and tireless service over the decades. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude. It is a privilege to work with him.
Senator Ferguson, 36, was first elected to the Senate in 2010 and is vice-chair of the powerful Budget and Taxation Committee. The Teach for America alumnus earned his undergraduate degree from Davidson College, a master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins University, and a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. RWL congratulates Senator Ferguson on the unanimous support he received from the Senate Democratic Caucus and the monumental achievement it foretells. We look forward to continuing our strong working relationship with him in the days and years to come.
