The Oyster Recovery Partnership & the BMI

This years event is being held in partnership with The Oyster Recovery Partnership. ORP will share info on oyster restoration efforts taking place in the Chesapeake Bay. They will also circulate the collected shell from the event through their shell recycling program, to be reused as host shells for planting more oysters into the Chesapeake Bay.

What’s the connection, you ask?

The Baltimore Museum of Industry is housed in the Platt & Company Oyster Packing building, one of the earliest industrial sites in Locust Point. Built circa 1865 by Landra Beach Platt, the site now represents one of the last remaining cannery buildings in Baltimore. A prime location for canning, Baltimore has the westernmost port on the East coast granting good railway and ocean access. Chesapeake Bay oysters arrived by boat, were processed at this site, and sold all over the world as “Platt’s Tiger Brand.” In the off season, workers canned fruits and vegetables. Visitors are invited to walk across the late 19th century floorboards and imagine themselves working in the canning industry that once boomed in Charm City. (You can read an architectural history here or see a video about the Cannery here.)
