The Baltimore Whiskey Company is humbly owned and operated by Max Lents, Ian Newton, and Eli Breitburg-Smith. Each of us is a proud resident of Baltimore, The Greatest City in America. We are inspired by the city’s pride in its history, music, sports, cuisine, arts, and humanity to bring a culture of Rye whiskey and spirits manufacturing back to Maryland.
We are proud to be a part of the buzzing, vibrant community that boasts of America’s first cathedral, a world-renowned medical school in Johns Hopkins, Hampden’s annual toilet races, multiple NFL Superbowl championships, and one of the nation’s most eclectic, community-supported art scenes. Such a city deserves a spirit to be proud of. Cheers, hon.
Maryland’s distilling roots run deep. Prior to Prohibition, Maryland proudly produced what was widely regarded to be the nation’s finest whiskey, a distinct style called Maryland Rye. During the 13 years of Prohibition, Maryland’s enterprising farmers continued to turn their plentiful harvests into high-proof “swamp lightning” in stills hidden among the coves, inlets, and marshes of the Chesapeake, and oystermen and crabbers smuggled the “good stuff” up and down the Bay, evading Federal Revenue agents and the Coast Guard and finding safe haven among the close-lipped communities that lined the tidewater.
But rarely did they face harassment from local authorities. Maryland, the only state never to enact a Prohibition enforcement law, was known as the “wettest state” during Prohibition. It was during this time that Maryland figures such as Governor Albert Richie and author and Baltimore Sunpapers columnist H.L. Mencken rose to national fame for their vehement opposition to what they viewed as an egregious overreach of Federal authority, and rumrunners like Pete “King James” Kelly rose to infamy.
At Blackwater Distilling, founded in 2008 and Maryland’s first fully-licensed beverage alcohol distillery since 1972, we celebrate this brash, enterprising, and fiercely independent spirit by crafting distinctive spirits that stand apart from the crowd, using organic and local ingredients when possible.
BlueDyer Distilling Company is a Southern Maryland distillery, operated and founded by Ryan Vierheller and Walker Dunbar, as an endeavor to pay homage to a family tradition of distilling. Ryan’s great-grandfather’s copper pot still, which was once active in the days of Prohibition, is proudly displayed in the distillery as a reminder to remain true to the original process of handcrafting spirits.
Ryan and Walker continue this tradition by creating truly hand-made spirits: every step of the process from fermentation, filtering, distillation, barreling, proofing, and bottling is done at the facility by them. BlueDyer is open for tours and tastings Saturdays and Sundays, 2pm-10pm, and Monday-Friday, by appointment only.

The goal of Dark Cloud Malthouse is to provide locally sourced, high quality raw and craft malted grains to the craft brewing and distilling industry.
Dark Cloud Malthouse was founded by local Maryland engineer, Danny Buswell and local Maryland brewer, Jesse Kaiss. Most locally brewed beer and distilled spirits are crafted using grain grown and malted thousands of miles away. Danny and Jesse decided to create a way to introduce local grains to the craft beverage market.
The malthouse is located on the same farm where our barley is produced. We also work with local growers who are suppyling our raw grains with in an effort to provide local farmers with another avenue to market local crops. We always seek to provide our local beverage craftsmen with the opportunity to offset a portion of their grain with unique local ingredients.
We are a small craft distillery located in Frederick, Maryland, directly across from the airport. We specialize in small batch artisan spirits, made from the finest locally-sourced ingredients in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Some may call us quirky or eccentric, and we are happy to embrace this. We believe in individuality, creativity, and innovation. We strive to bring all of this to the creation of our unique, high-quality spirits.
The door opened for distillery ventures in 2005, when the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation permitting distillery operations at wineries. Mike Fiore led the effort by Maryland winemakers to lobby for the law. The law limited the amount of distilled beverages that can be produced to 200 gallons, far less than the 4,000 gallons a typical craft distillery produces, but its a start and we began producing products that we feel will hold up to the same high standards our wines do.
Fiore produces grappa, vodka, Maryland Straight Rye, moonshine and limoncello.
